The Wolf Among Us story and episodes, spoiler-light
The Wolf Among Us takes place in 1986, about twenty years before Bill Willingham's Fables comics. Fairy-tale characters, the Fables, fled their conquered Homelands and live in secret in Manhattan, in a community called Fabletown. You play Bigby Wolf, the former Big Bad Wolf and now Fabletown's sheriff, as he looks into a brutal murder. The remaster tells the same story over five episodes: Faith, Smoke & Mirrors, A Crooked Mile, In Sheep's Clothing, and Cry Wolf. Below, we explain the premise without giving away the mystery.
The setting: Fabletown
An enigmatic tyrant known as the Adversary overran the Homelands, the worlds of myth and folklore. The Fables who escaped settled in colonial America, and their enclave ended up in modern Manhattan. Ordinary humans are "mundys". Fables who don't look human must pay for a magic disguise called a glamour. If they can't, they get sent to the Farm, a rural community upstate. Much of the story's tension comes from that rule, and from how poorly the Business Office looks after the poorer Fables.
The five episodes
| 1. Faith | A late-night call to a rundown building leads Bigby to a case that quickly turns into a murder investigation. |
|---|---|
| 2. Smoke & Mirrors | The investigation moves into Fabletown's seedier side, including the Pudding & Pie club. |
| 3. A Crooked Mile | Bigby follows the trail across the city as the stakes rise and new power players appear. |
| 4. In Sheep's Clothing | The case reaches the people who profit from Fables who can't afford glamours. |
| 5. Cry Wolf | The finale, where Bigby's earlier choices and reputation come to a head. |
How choices work
The game is a third-person narrative adventure. You explore scenes and examine objects. In conversations you choose dialogue under a timer, and the answers you pick change how characters see Bigby: feared, trusted, or resented. Action scenes use quick-time prompts, and missing some of them can change what happens later. Major decisions branch the details of the story, but the overall case is the same for everyone. The remaster keeps this structure, according to Telltale's announcement.
Where it fits with Fables and the sequel
The game is a prequel to the Fables comics, so you don't need to have read them. Many characters appear here before their comic storylines. Telltale's sequel, The Wolf Among Us 2, is scheduled for 2027 and continues Bigby's story. The remaster is pitched as the way to catch up before it.
